Working toward a show can be exhausting but also exhilating! I am currently painting joy if such a thing can be done...we'll see.

I will have a show at the Winds Cafe and Bakery here in Yellow Springs for the month of March. This time, I elected to show with a friend, Jennifer O'Brien, who I know through Western Ohio Watercolor Society. We hope to do a reception on Sunday, March 11.

Contemplating Christmas coming, cookie making, decorating, dinner parties, etc - thought I'd post a painting I did of pastries in a french bakery (in D.C.) - they are non-caloric if you just admire the painting! They looked so delectable with their dense chocolate, lovely strawberries, cremes and foils wrappings. I simply had to paint them.
Today, my mother-in-law brought over oil paints and a wonderful video of Hockney - so very kind!

'Evening Colors' watercolor painting - 2011

This is a little sketch I made during the play 'Chicago' that the Y.S. High School theatre group did last spring....of Velma, one of the main characters. I did it in the dark in a little diary I brought - with a flair. I guess I'll bring it along next week and make more of the current actors/actresses.
I'm putting together the program for the upcoming playright now - want to put in an ad?
It is 'A Night in Ballyhoo' - to be performed Nov. 11,12, 13 and 18,19,20 at Mills Lawn. I hope you can come see it!

We've decided to name the little finches Roy, G & Biv since they are so incredibly colorful...perhaps a future subject for a painting? The birds were perfect welcoming hosts for our guests during the studio tour.....they stole the attention away from the art at times!
Last night, I saw that the Dayton City Paper did a piece on us (thank you Lara!) and it features one of my pieces! cool...
This piece is also in the Friends Care Rehabilitation Center - a framed print in the reception area.

Yellow Springs Arts: "Popcorn Girl" at Little Art#links

The Yalloween Scarecrow for Little Art Theatre is up! Popcorn Girl is her name - she has popcorn hair...so she'll get lots of visits from her friends, the birds. She is made up of vintage reels from Little Art along with a popcorn cup skirt, coffee cup hairdoo, soda can eyes/mouth and lots of mix-up from the family winter bin.
I also have artwork up in the lobby - I guess the show is extending into October - haven't heard anything about taking it down...

Well, it's official! I'll be a host on the Yellow Springs Artist Studio Tour this coming fall. I'll have 2 guest artists showing their work in the house along with me...
I'm working on new paintings for the tour as well as ideas for a range of 'good to extravagent price' possibilities for folks to consider when they come. It should be exciting!
Hope it is profitable too - so I can buy more paint, go to more workshops.

Went down to see the OWS travelling exhibit in Lebanon yesterday with art friends - very nice. It was great to see Yuki and Misuk's artwork hanging in the show. I would have preferred to see the show hung in a large gallery that was dedicated only to it but...it sufficed.
also - you may be able to see me on tv if channel 22 gets the video posted. They interviewed me for the "Where you Live" piece because this week is about Yellow Springs!

Inspirations from the sea...

I just got back from an escape to the tropics of Puerto Rico and want to paint all that I saw there, well mostly. We drove through an area crowded with people eating at outdoor barbeque stands by the beach - walked the lush paths of El Junque Rainforest Park and swam in the salty waves where we found large patches of live sand dollars under our feet. When you lift them in your hand, they sidle around on prickly bristles that cover their bottom side....it tickles! We then released them. Here is a pic of some of the beauty to be found there.....

I enjoy reading Robert Genn's twice weekly letter to artists, though I don't always get to read it (!). This week is about spring cleaning. It is something I'm slowly working on. I'm trying to organize my art work, supplies, etc along with the house. I'm endeavoring to create a place that is conducive to painting, organized with the supplies I use most, etc.
Robert says that putting the old paintings in the fire and starting fresh is good - in theory. Actually, he advocates storing them to peruse occasionally. He also says that giving away a painting or sketch to a friend or studio visitor is good - for you and the friend.

Baltimore Museum of Art

I went to visit the Baltimore Museum of Art with my parents during a short stay with them. We especially enjoyed the 'Cone Collection'. Two Baltimore ladies, the Cone sisters, collected more than 3000 art objects, visited the studios of Matisse and Picasso, etc. and brought it all back to their apartment in Baltimore. You even get to walk thru the 'virtual' apartment. I truly enjoyed seeing the work of Matisse over his life span, how he evolved from realism to lively, colorful, pattern-full work.

The museum also has a vast collection of American furniture, china and silver, Indian and Oceanic art, a contemporary photo exhibit.....and a wonderful restaurant with YUMMY Oyster stew. It made me so homesick for my Annapolis childhood.

This is a painting by watercolor artist, Enid Willard, who teaches a couple of classes to
beginning and advanced students in Springfield. I am helping put together a group show
'Spring Bursts Forth' at Glen Helen Atrium Gallery which will hang in March. Approximately 15
artists who have studied with Enid will participate in the show. Many are members of
the Western Ohio Watercolor Society in Springfield as well as the Fairborn Art Association. I am a member of those groups as well as Yellow Springs Arts Council, of course....yowza!
There will be an opening on Sunday, March 6 from 2-4pm at the gallery.

Sat with friends Mary, Marion and Ruth to paint the sunflowers on the Tecumseh Land Trust/Whitehall Farm property - directly across from Peifers Orchard on Rt 68 - What Fun!!! It feel like we are Renoir or Monet, painting the lovely fields of France - right here in Ohio. I'll be there again - plein aire - on friday morning with a Springfield group to paint. My daughter Melanie complains that I only go when she's in school so you may find me there again this w.e. All the local galleries will be filled with sunflowers!

Saw my sis this morning at one of favorite spots on the earth - the Emporium Coffee/Underdog Cafe. She asked about how to convert a photo into a drawing. First I thought, well, give me a pencil - I draw, you know....

OK OK - lots of travel and fun this summer along with tending my paintings at the Winds. The show was a success - well worth the effort. On to more endeavors - got to start working toward the Glen Show.

We travelled to U.P., MI and saw the lovely Pictured Rock park. We so enjoyed being on Lake Michigan during this extreme summer.

'Watercolors at the Winds' exhibit is up through July 25. In order to support the efforts of Yellow Springs Kids Theater, I will donate 50% of the proceeds for the next painting sold! The current show, Conference of the Birds is truly lovely, marvelous music, vibrant costumes and set and youth giving it their all. Each actor or actress shines at one time or another and I love the harmonizing, the dancing, the puppets. It is truly delightful to go the Winds with friends, to look at my ; ) art and hear their comments. Of course, I realize that it would feel awkward for them to say they don't like this or that... As we peruse the artwork, we often see others we know and they tell me which painting is their favorite. Yellow Springs is an incredibly art-supportive town! I love living here. Here is a pic from the show... The reception was a wonderful success, thanks to Mom and Dad and lots of friends helping with food and set-up as well as hanging! I have sold enough to cover frames so YES, it has been a worthwhile endeavor. It is deeply gratifying to see ones' work displayed in quantity and to have people say what they like...then even acquire it for their own home. I thought of the childrens' book, 'The Crane Maiden' as I framed the work, how the crane maiden pulled feathers to weave the beautiful cloth - I wove these colors into paintings from my soul.

It is Strawberry cutting time for the Yellow Springs Street Fair - a morning of sitting with old and young as we cut the berries. So, I'll be weilding a knife instead of a brush today. Fealing Lin workshop

I attended the Western Ohio Watercolor Society workshop with Fealing Lin, an amazing artist. She did demos of her techniques of painting lovely sensitive portraits and also landscapes that have powerful shape, value and color interactions. It was a wonderful week - topped off meeting her and Misuk, a friend, to walk around Yellow Springs. She very much enjoyed the ambiance here, the lovely work (staff and cat too) in Bonadies, the friendly guy in the Asian shop in the brick place, etc. Here's a pic I did in the workshop and one of Fealing painting during the workshop.

went to the Fairborn Art Assoc. meeting and saw a great presentation by an energetic artist named Clarice Moore. She's a violinist, violin teacher and self-taught visual artist who told us of her various endeavors. She's written and illustrated a book called Dilly the Violin and self-published it. She's a lot more agressive about the marketing thing than I am - sigh - I should get going on "The Family Tree of the Rainbow" again with Raymond...!

Monday Morning Artists

The first monday of the month, several Yellow Springs and surrounding area artists meet to paint, critique, share and inspire eachother at the First Presbyterian Church in Y.S. from 9ish to noon.

We call ourselves the Monday Morning Artists. Come join us!

We presently have a show hanging in the gathering space there, Westminster Hall, of about 15 paintings in honor of the Y.S. Chamber Music 25th anniversary. You may view the show during regular office hours M-F 9-noon or sunday after the service, around 11:30-12:30ish. We were honored at the Recognition celebration and concert Nov. 9 by Mary White, one of the leaders of Y.S.C.M. for our visual contribution to their festivities.

The Monday Morning Artists meet the first monday of the month to paint at the First Presby Church. Recently, we painted plein aire at Grinnell Mill. We have now hung a show at the mill. There are paintings and small quilts by ten local Yellow Springs artists in a variety of media.

At the local Elementary School, I run an Arts "pull-out" for kids who test as being creative. We meet once a week to explore art ideas. I have the help of the Specialist teacher and other artists.

Today, we played outdoors Andy Goldsworthy-style. It was tremendous fun. We watched a short power point about Andy and a segment of Rivers and Tides, the movie about him, to get an idea of his motivations. Each child dove right in and started using found materials to create a natural sculpture or pictorial element. Here are a few photos.

The book is available at the EcoMental in Yellow Springs, OH. It is the story drawn from the Maori heritage of Raymond Ruka, the author. I did the layout and illustrations. The cover art is by Tanya Ruka.

We did a story time at YS Library a few years ago - may be time to visit again... You can purchase our book at Eco Mental in YS, a lovely store on Main St - very green!

on Main St, Yellow Springs, OH
